Subgenres

The subgenres, and the four axes underneath them

The main branches of lofi and how to tell them apart: brightness, noise, musical activity and structure, plus guides to lofi hip hop, chillhop, lofi jazz, Latin lofi and ambient.

In short

None of these labels has an authority behind it. What is more useful than the names are the four axes underneath: how bright the top end is, how much noise is deliberately present, how much musical activity is going on, and whether the track has sections or is a loop.

Labels without an authority

None of the terms below has a governing body behind it. They emerged from playlists, forums and upload titles, which means any two listeners will draw the boundaries slightly differently and nobody is definitively wrong. That is worth saying before a page that draws boundaries.

What is more useful than the labels are the axes underneath them. Almost every distinction in this field reduces to four questions: how bright is the top end, how much noise is deliberately present, how much musical activity is going on, and does the track have sections or is it a loop. Answer those four about any track and you can place it without needing the label at all.

The four axes

  • Brightness. Lofi hip hop rolls the top off. Chillhop keeps it. Sleep material is darker than either.
  • Noise. Central to lofi, incidental to chillhop, sometimes the entire content in ambient and sleep material.
  • Activity. Lofi loops. Chillhop develops. Jazz leaning material improvises.
  • Structure. A loop with no ending, or a piece with sections and a written close.

Function cuts across all of it

Because this whole field was organised by what the music is for rather than by scene or nationality, function is a fifth axis that cuts across the other four. A regional tradition can enter the category by supplying its own harmonic and rhythmic material inside the same production conventions, which is exactly what Latin lofi does, and what a great many other regional branches are doing at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

How many subgenres of lofi are there?

There is no fixed number, because the labels come from playlists and forums rather than from any authority. The five covered here are the ones that describe genuinely different material rather than the same material under a different name.

What is the difference between lofi and chillhop?

Chillhop is brighter, cleaner, uses less noise texture and contains more musical development, often with live playing. Lofi hip hop is darker, noisier and deliberately flat in structure.
