Lofi drums: why the snare is late, and what swing actually means

Lofi drums are deliberately not on the grid. Swing shifts every second subdivision later by a percentage, and separately a producer nudges individual hits, most often dragging the snare a few milliseconds behind the beat. That lag is what makes a programmed pattern feel relaxed rather than mechanical.
The grid and the reason to leave it
A sequencer places events on a grid of exact subdivisions. Perfectly gridded drums are useful for many kinds of music, and for lofi they are the wrong starting point, because the genre is imitating performance and imitating older recording chains, neither of which is exact.
There are two separate ways to leave the grid, and they are often confused. Swing is a systematic rule applied to a whole pattern. Humanisation is per hit deviation. A track can have one, both or neither, and they sound quite different.
Swing, precisely
Swing delays every second subdivision by a proportion of the distance to the next one. At no swing, two semiquavers within a beat are evenly spaced. Increase the swing and the second one moves later, up towards a triplet feel and, at the extreme, close to a dotted rhythm.
The important detail is that swing is usually applied at the semiquaver level in hip hop derived music, not the quaver level as in jazz. That is why a swung hip hop hi hat pattern has a rolling character rather than the long short bounce of a swing ride cymbal.
Hardware samplers implemented swing as a percentage, and specific machines had specific characteristic values that producers still quote to each other. The reason those numbers persist is that they were the actual settings on the actual machines that made the records people are imitating.
The lagging snare
Separately from swing, lofi producers routinely drag the snare or rimshot slightly behind the beat, by a handful of milliseconds. The kick usually stays put, or moves less. The result is a small, consistent tension between the two, and it is the single most characteristic timing move in the genre.
Why it works is not mysterious. Drummers do this. A relaxed feel in live playing frequently involves the backbeat sitting fractionally late against the pulse, and a listener reads lateness as ease and earliness as urgency. Programming the same relationship reproduces the perception.
The amount matters more than most producers admit. Too little and the pattern still reads as mechanical. Too much and the snare stops belonging to the beat and starts sounding like a mistake, particularly at slower tempos where there is more room for the ear to notice.
The sound of the kit
Lofi drum sounds are almost always processed heavily, and in a specific order of priorities.
- Transient reduction. Saturation or soft clipping to take the sharp edge off the attack, so the kit sits under the harmony rather than in front of it.
- Band limiting. High frequencies rolled off, often aggressively. A crisp hi hat belongs to a different genre.
- Layering. A kick with weight but no click, often two samples combined: one for the low end and one for the body.
- Room. Short reverb or a sampled room, used to place the kit somewhere rather than to create space. Long reverb on lofi drums smears the pattern.
- Level. Mixed lower than in most hip hop. The drums are the floor, not the subject.
Patterns
The default pattern is very simple: kick on the first beat and somewhere around the third, snare or rimshot on two and four, hi hats carrying the subdivision. What varies is the hi hat figure and the kick placement, and the most common way to add interest is to displace a kick to just before or after where it is expected.
Fills are rare and short. A long fill is an event, and events pull attention, which is contrary to what the music is generally for. Where a track wants a section change it more often achieves it by removing an element than by adding a fill.
Tempo
Most lofi sits in the seventies or eighties in beats per minute. At that speed there is a lot of space between hits, which is what allows the noise layer and the sustained harmony to be heard, and it is also why timing deviations are so audible: a few milliseconds is a larger proportion of a slow subdivision than of a fast one.
